A
Larger Flock of Sparrows (Portsdown U3A Mah Jongg group report
20101-2011
The
game of Mah Jongg is said to derive its name from the sound made as
the tiles (which act like cards in other games) are moved around the
table (to mix them up) at the start of each round. The sound is meant
to resemble a flock of sparrows chattering!!
Like
many groups, ours has recently had lots of new applications from new
members who want to learn how to play this fascinating game. This has
given our ‘core’ group pause for thought as we very much want to
be able to accommodate our recruits: Various options have been
considered, and at the moment we are trialling the simplest – stay
as we are, but keeping a more active ‘eye’ on the numbers
attending to make sure we can accommodate everyone who wants to
attend on any one evening. Currently we meet in different members’
houses, but we may eventually need to move to a larger venue.
What
a wonderful situation to be in! We’ve so far welcomed and ‘taught’
(!) two of the new people and hope to see more of you soon.
Long-term
members have got braver at trying ‘special hands’ (which need a
bit more thought and planning), now that they know the basics pretty
well, and spurred on by experienced, but new-to-us members! Each one
who is successful at this gets a delighted (surprised?) round of
applause, so well done to those of you who did have a go. We hope as
the group continues to grow, there will be more applause, if not
louder ‘chattering of sparrows’!!
