IMPORTANT MESSAGES

23 March 2020 – Message from Portsdown U3A Committee

Dear Members

After due deliberation all Portsdown U3A’s Interest groups will close until further notice to ensure the safety, the health and the well-being of its members.

Please would Group Leaders contact anyone in their group who does not have email and let them know of the closure – thanks.

Please see website for ideas from the National Office to keep you engaged with a new or different interest. You could, perhaps, get together with others over the phone to pursue a common interest, or start or continue a personal/family history something you never had time to do before.

You will be kept up-to-date with all eventualities at this time of uncertainty.

Tony Rickard has kindly sent in this link:

BBC Step-by-step guide: How to video call your family

This guide will show you how to make and receive video calls on a variety of devices.

Thank you to those members who are continuing to send in their membership fees by post, they are being processed and you will receive your cards in your SAE in due course – it is all taking a little longer to process as we are not meeting up at present. Please keep them coming in.

You can still use bank transfer, if that is your preferred method of payment.

If you need anything please don’t hesitate to contact us and we will see what we can do to help.

Please keep yourselves safe; look after each other,

Best wishes

PortsdownPortsdown U3A– An opportunity to enrich lives, have new interests and friendships, with a sense of belonging

At U3A, our main aim is to enable people, who are retired, to explore new interests in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. In our Interest Groups, we learn from each other. Our range is broad: we now have over 30 groups!

There are no limits on the number of groups a member can join. Please see the Groups webpage for further information.

Prospective members may attend two taster sessions before joining a group. Should they then wish to join that group they must become paid-up members of Portsdown U3A.

Portsdown U3A covers the North of the city of Portsmouth, although we welcome all comers! We hold General Meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of each month (except August) at 2pm in the Cosham Baptist Church, Havant Road, Cosham. A speaker’s presentation is followed by a chance to meet other members and to have a cup of tea.

Visitors are very welcome at General Meetings, on payment of a £2 charge. Our annual fee is really good value at £16 as you can join as many Interest Groups as you wish! We are always on the look out for new members who are willing to start new groups in subjects that interest them.

We are pleased to welcome you to our website and hope to see you at one of our meetings!

IMPORTANT NEWS – BEACON Database

We are using a system called Beacon to hold all our members data securely in one place.

BEACON provides a comprehensive set of tools for handling membership, new members, renewals, subscriptions, address changes and email communications. In addition BEACON provides Group Leaders with membership management and easy communication with group members.

A new BEACON feature is being introduced where each member will have access only to their own secure data, meaning that they will be able to check that the data we hold is correct and will also be able to make amendments as appropriate eg: to keep their address and phone numbers current.

You can access your personal secure BEACON data by selecting Members Portal

You can view the instructions on how to access your BEACON data by clicking here

Project: THE IMPACT ON THE PEOPLE OF PORTSMOUTH OF THE BATTLE OF JUTLAND

A collaboration between the Portsdown U3A History and Genealogy Groups and the University of Portsmouth’s Port Towns and Urban Cultures (PTUC) group has produced an interactive map showing all Portsmouth casualties from the Battle of Jutland. This was generously funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
